Saloua Choucair’s Interlocking forms with Zara Peters

In this hands-on family workshop inspired by the sculptural practice of Saloua Choucair, young participants will create their own sculptures inspired by the artist's visual language. Drawing from Choucair’s use of a restricted color palette and her abstract forms, participants will paint and assemble nine individual cardboard jigsaw pieces, inspired by her Poem of Nine Verses, to create their own sculptural compositions.

Beginning with a selection of shapes prepared in advance, children will choose two or three colors alongside white to mix and develop their own palettes, experimenting with color and form before bringing their pieces together. Once dry, the individual elements can be assembled and rearranged, allowing each participant to discover how separate shapes can interact to create a new sculptural work of their own.

By the end of the session, children leave with their own  geometric sculpture, along with a deeper understanding of a prolific regional artist.

About the Instructor

Zara Peters is a maker from the north of England. Hailing from a long line of makers and menders, she says resourcefulness and repair run through her veins.  Zara never stopped making alongside her two decade career in TV, working for iconic brands MTV and Cartoon Network. In recent years she set up her own small brand thread maker, creating special embroidery pieces and giant bows. From London to Abu Dhabi, thread maker is an exploration in all things hand made, from natural dye to patchwork, keepsakes from antique linens and creating things that bring joy.
