Studio Seminars
Join us for a Studio Session with multidisciplinary artist Hassana Arif as we address and destigmatize approaches to drawing, and later translate these drawings into sculptural forms. Through intuitive exercises, image-making by way of imagination, textures, and found images, participants will be encouraged to abandon control and let go of preconceived notions of drawing.
We will also translate our drawings into clay forms—reflecting on motifs, instances, and moments that emerged during the drawing process and materialize them into sculptural responses. Moving from two-dimensional mark-making to three-dimensional form, participants will explore how intuition, texture, and imagination can guide both drawing and sculpture.
Participants will gain a foundational understanding of intuitive drawing practices, introductory clay-working techniques, and the process of translating drawings into sculptural clay forms.
Together we will learn to understand how different works and exercises can exist in dialogue with one another when building a body of work.
As part of the session, participants will receive a 421 Artist Kit to continue exploring these practices beyond the seminar. Each kit contains the essential tools needed to continue drawing exercises and clay sculpture translations independently. The kit will also include a how-to guide outlining some of Hassana’s go-to techniques for drawing and sculpting, supporting participants as they continue nurturing this practice after the session.
