Sounds of the Sea tells the story of an ageing Emirati fishing community on the Um Al Quwain Creek. Once famed for their sea songs, the community is slowly being orgotten. Despite their age, the fishermen hope for one more sea voyage with Saif Al zibadi, to revive the songs of this legendary sea singer. As more immigrants are hired to replace the ageing fisherman, the newcomers sing songs of their own, replacing both the fisherman and the traditional Emirati sea songs.

A caravan escorts an elderly and dying Sheikh through the Moroccan Atlas. His last wish is to be buried with his close ones. But death does not wait. The caravaners, fearful of the mountain, refuse to continue transporting the corpse. Saïd and Ahmed, two rogues traveling with the caravan, say they know the way and promise to take the corpse to its destiny. In another world, Shakib is chosen to travel to the mountains with a mission: to help the improvised caravaners.

Fellows will introduce their projects and answer questions from the public. The session demonstrates the role that constructive critique can play in illuminating and refining the often solitary art-making process. 

A touring exhibition from the Design Museum, London

This exhibition, curated for the Design Museum by Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, captures over twenty objects mid-manufacture, putting the aesthetic of the unfinished center stage. Varying from the £2 coin to a cricket bat, a surprising range of objects have been chosen by British designers Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, founders of the design studio Barber & Osgerby, to be exhibited in an unfinished state, celebrating the intriguing beauty of the production process.

The objects have been selected because they each have an unexpected quality about them in those moments, hours or days before they assume their final, recognizable form. These points in the making process capture a peculiar and unconventional slice of time in the production of everyday objects such as tennis balls, banknotes and even diamonds. The show gives a glimpse of the designers’ ongoing dialogue with manufacturing that is so distinctive to their practice. Throughout their careers, Edward and Jay have had a technical curiosity and fascination with the making process. The way in which things are created has had a profound influence on them and continually inspires their work.

This exhibition is presented in partnership with the British Council for the “UK/UAE 2017” year of Creative Collaboration program.

This talk will provide a rare masterclass in the process of design from internationallyacclaimed design duo, Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby. Together, they will talk about their passion for design, their processes and methods, and offer personal insights into some of their most iconic projects, which include the Loop Table, the Tip Ton chair and the torch for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Rabih, a blind musician, travels across rural Lebanon in search of a record of his own birth. He meets people on the far fringes of society who tell their own stories and open further questions about his origins. Descending into a void at the heart of his existence, Rabih encounters a nation incapable of telling his or its own narrative.

An animated documentary film, based on an actual story of a woman from Damascus countryside. Suleima evokes some of childhood memories, when her thoughts refusing injustice had arisen. The film is a portrait of Suleima, and a monitoring of intellectual and social shifts she experiences during the events. The visual environment has been presented graphically fully of sharp contrasts, and imaginary mixed with reality.

Participants in this two-part workshop will work together to repurpose potential waste products – plastic water bottles – into a one-of-a-kind piece of public art. The first session will introduce different types of polymers and invite participants to commence the process of transforming plastic bottles. The second session, will provide insights into the recycling process for plastics before inviting participants to add their transformed plastic bottles to a temporary piece of public art that will change with the sun, wind and shadows. 

Participants in this hands-on workshop will experiment with the ongoing relationship between two-dimensional and three-dimensional processes to create unique forms and produce drawings and objects. A range of drawing, print-making and sculptural techniques will be employed to reinterpret found images and objects.

Cohort 4

Community and critique go hand in hand where rigorous reflection, questioning, and analysis support the advancement of content and form in one’s process and work. Access to materials, techniques, and methods support the development of ideas, and form reveals itself through multiple iterations of the work itself.

This show is the culmination of the yearlong Salama bint Hamdan Emerging Artists Fellowship program (SEAF). These fifteen artists have worked side by side all year in a studio-based community, supporting one another by exchanging knowledge and critical dialogue along the way.

Bringing their works into Warehouse421 means stepping outside the intimacy of the SEAF studios, into the culture and community of the city. Presenting their work in a professional space provides an opportunity to share and speak about it with others; and thus becomes an important moment within their continuing process. The critique asks participants to articulate what they are thinking about and seeing, both formally and conceptually, contributing to the complexity and richness of process that leads to sustained artistic practice.

You might learn something, or you might just want to finish the week with some fun!

Mona Haddad offers a very personal workshop, demonstrating how they create various forms of perfumes based on old family recipes. While discussing the ingredients and the alchemy of scents, she will also evoke the cultural memories that the fragrances inspire.

Participants in this workshop will learn the basics of DJing – including the creation of mix tapes, assembling a cohesive live set, combining vinyl records and digital music in a live setting, and of course, hip hop-style scratching – while gaining an understanding of the main sub-genres of Electronic Dance Music (known as “EDM”).

Warli Art uses simple shapes to depict daily life activities in India, while using contracts to make imagery stand out. Children will explore these patterns and compositions to create their own Warli paintings.

Participants in this fun and original workshop will be guided through the process of creating a stuffed doll’s head that resembles the face of a prominent musician.  Combining fun, humor, design and craft, workshop participants will be invited to stuff and decorate their own unique doll’s head that can be used as a cushion, work of art, or a one-of-a-kind mask.  

Participants in this class will learn about the many benefits of yoga in terms of producing a healthier spinal alignment and strengthening the core muscles that support the body.  Designed for beginners and those that have not practiced yoga for some time, this interactive session will also introduce participants to a range of basic yoga poses.

They will be getting to the bottom of some of the common myths and misconceptions around and find out what trending superfoods need to be added to diets today.

The six members, who are now major celebrities and musicians, are reunited to perform one last time in a night to remember in spring 2010. Les Petits Chats film provides an insight into the lives of the former bandmates during their glory days and answers the questions evoked within each one of them by tracing their present lives and life choices since their breakup in the 80's. The film showcases interviews with major celebrities and cinema stars at that time and nowadays including: Ezzat Abu Ouf, Omar Khairat, Sobhi Bedair, Samir Sabri and Mohamed Salmawy.

Working with Textiles and Design

This workshop will offer a hands-on exploration of the patterns found on everyday objects. Geometric and vegetal patterns make up over 60% of the non-figural types of decoration used in Islamic art, and are also featured prominently on many household textiles.

Under the instructor’s guidance, workshop participants will be asked to identify patterns in fabric samples provided to them, or alternatively they can bring their own material that they would like to work with. Participants will learn how to extract a pattern and create a stencil, which will then be used to produce an abstract work using various materials.

The Evolution and Practice of Henna

The focus of this workshop will be the evolution of Henna designs through Emirati history. The workshop will start with a short history of the use of Henna with a particular focus on its relationship to line illustration and patterns. Participants will then be invited to make a simple hand model from alginate and plaster which they can then decorate with Henna to produce a finished piece.

The In-Between

This exhibition examines the divide between the recent past and the assumed present. It aims to understand the dynamics between the set future, and the captivating narratives of our histories that are often romanticized. Hence, the exhibition title “ bayn -the in-between” which looks at that space in between those two prevailing narratives that is often rarely examined. The artists in the exhibition were invited to deconstruct and reconstruct labels, boundaries, and the assigned identities in order to understand this constant state of transformation.

Emirati Adornment: Tangible & Intangible

This exhibition presents a rich exploration of Emirati identity as conveyed through modes of adornment. The exhibition explores ‘tangible,’ lasting forms of adornment, including garments, burga, jewelry, weapons and attributes. It also embraces invisible aspects of adornment: the innate knowledge and skills needed to create evanescent adornment through the application of henna, kohl and fragrance, as well as through grooming and hairstyles. Emirati adornment, in all its complexity and beauty, is revealed through personal examples with insights offered by Emirati people. The highly interactive art exhibition welcomes visitor contribution of objects, memories and reflections pertaining to Emirati adornment.
