Seeing Through by Toral Gajarawala
The artist Nasreen Mohamedi was sketching grids of the finest lines, and photographing the jaalis of India. And the novelist Syed Waliullah was imagining nets, those that bore reams of tiny fish, those woven by hand to cover the skin, and those that hid the recesses of thought. How did these artists capture per-foration, the art of seeing through?
Toral Jatin Gajarawala is a scholar of comparative literature at NYU. Her teaching and research examine the ways in which culture is shaped by the lived realities of postcoloniality. Her book Untouchable Fictions: Literary Realism and the Crisis of Caste, sketches an anti-genealogy for Dalit literature, as against normative Indian realisms, modernisms, and regionalisms.
