Mina Zayed commemorative tea towels by Khalid Mezaina
Mina Zayed is one of the most iconic areas in the city of Abu Dhabi. Located by the port, it is a hub for trade, economic development, and cultural exchange. It’s a bustling area where you can find practically everything. From multipurpose warehouses, designated fruit, vegetable & the fish markets, shops for plants and homeware – Mina Zayed has it all! Only time will tell how much longer Mina Zayed will be left untouched. For that reason, I wanted to create commemorative tea towels to honour the neighbourhood, and capture the raw, vibrant and organic atmosphere one feels when in the port area.
Khalid Mezaina graduated from the American University of Sharjah in 2006 in Visual Communication, and from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2018 in Textiles. His career in the art world was short-lived, as he focused on sustaining an independent studio practise in 2018. Illustration and textiles are his areas of focus, juggling self-initiated projects with client-based commissions. Mezaina creates work about growing up in a city that’s constantly changing. He's inspired by what brings him joy – comics, dance and music, global textile traditions, and findings from the city he calls home.
