Architecture of Loneliness Limited Edition notebooks by GPP & 421 

This publication was commissioned as part of the Architecture of Loneliness exhibition in December 2018.

"There is one thing that unites everyone living in the UAE, including people born here and those that have relocated from elsewhere, and it is that the place can feel largely new to both. Those raised in the UAE no longer occupy the same spaces. The arcades they spent their adolescence in are gone, the coffee shops of their teens have disappeared, the roads they once travelled on have been repaved, some torn down and replaced with highways." "One powerful thing about solitude, both imposed and self-inflicted, is the universal relatibility o it. Most of the scenes depicted are ones that many of us have come across before, perhaps driving from Dubai to Abu Dhabi and allowing our gaze to drift to a soon-to-be-inhabited development, rich and colourful and mosaic, sitting by itself against a backdrop of desert and sky. Freshly constructed bridges that connect one cirt to the next, not yet worn by travel and traffic, and towering skyscrapers that reflect nothing but the light. You will not encounter any human subjects in the photographs of this exhibition. The only human subject is you."

421 is a hub for creativity and an active participant in Abu Dhabi's creative ecosystem, and is dedicated to supporting learning, making, exhibitions and commercial activities relevant to the local and regional creative industries. Since November 2015, 421 has hosted 18 exhibitions and showcased the work of more than 400 local and regional artists and designers, providing a place for creatives to formally and informally convene. 421 offers the public the opportunity to explore their creativity through initiatives including talks, workshops, film screenings and performanc- es. Located in the Mina Zayed of Abu Dhabi, 421 was converted from two former industrial warehouses and designed by the respected Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG).

Gulf Photo Plus (GPP)
Gulf Photo Plus (GPP) is Dubai's center for photography, equipping and inspiring the local and international photog- raphy community through photography workshops, artist talks, state-of-the-art printing services, and the region's lon- gest-running international photography event, GPP Photo Week. GPP has garnered a reputation as a leader in photogra- phy events, both in the Gulf region and internationally, while developing the visual literacy of the community and pushing the boundaries of contemporary photography."
