Studio Seminars 

This studio session with Nagham Hammoush begins with a performance by the artist, which serves as a prompt for the session. Over the course of the studio session, attendees will produce a collective work made through repetition, accumulation, and shared movement across the same surface.

Attendees are also welcome to join for just the opening performance, held in the first hour of the session, before the hands-on workshop begins.

Rehearsing Boundaries is a live performance by Nagham Hammoush that reimagines hopscotch as a bodily system of play, rules, repetition, and negotiation. Through movement and printmaking, the body becomes both archive and printing tool, revealing how social structures, migration, memory, and belonging continually reshape identity.

Drawing from two of Nagham's performance works, Rehearsing Boundaries and I Couldn't See My Face, So I Printed It, the session translates their conceptual and physical logic into a participatory format that places participants inside the work. Here, the body is medium, surface, and trace at once, and identity is understood not as something fixed but as something continuously rewritten through repetition, movement, and contact with others.

The session unfolds in three stages. Participants begin by generating six words that have shaped their sense of self, arranging them into a hopscotch structure and drawing a path through them. Two papers are then exchanged with another participant; structures are rearranged, a second path drawn, and both walked through the body. Next, participants print their faces or parts of their bodies onto paper or glass, repeating the action until traces overlap and distort into something hybrid and unresolved. The session closes with the group in a collective practice: participants print the traces of their feet onto a shared fabric surface, moving over their own marks and those of others until individual paths dissolve into a surface that carries shared memory.

Participants leave with a deepened understanding of printmaking as a practice of contact, repetition, and transformation, alongside a 421 Artist Kit to continue material explorations beyond the session.

About the Instructor

Nagham Hammoush is a Syrian-German multidisciplinary artist and educator. She holds a BA in Fine Arts from the University of Damascus and an MA in Art in Context from the Berlin University of the Arts. Her practice focuses on participatory and interactive art, engaging with themes of identity, belonging, and gender, alongside her work in art education and cultural mediation. She explores the role of printmaking within contemporary art through its integration into performance and installation practices, investigating repetition and reproduction as tools that reflect memory, the rhythm of the body, and lived experience.
