Nine Nodes of Non-Being is a group exhibition presenting works by nine emerging and established artists, thinkers, filmmakers, and researchers from East, South, Southeast Asia, the MENA region, and South America. It conceives of climate-related extinction through various states of negation and excess emerging from each of the nine artistic nodes to examine ways of existing more equitably within our ongoing crises. 

Nine Nodes of Non-Being is curated by Ritika Biswas and emerged from a year-long journey as part of the 421 Curatorial Development Exhibition Program in collaboration with The Bombay Institute for Critical Analysis and Research (BICAR).  

In this new solo exhibition, artist Asma Belhamar presents a major body of work inspired by the UAE’s architectural history. The exhibition is footnoted by the artist’s reflections on culture and national identity in flux.

Belhamar is a participant in the 2023 cycle of the 421 Artistic Development Program. The program is organized in partnership with The Institute for Emerging Art.

Story of Water and Fire is a captivating account of the life of two prominent figures in the Iraqi art scene, poet and art critic May Muzaffar and artist Rafa Nasiri. Through vivid descriptions and rarely-seen photographs, this book offers a glimpse into the social and artistic milieu of Baghdad from the 1960s to the 1990s, as well as the couple’s travels during this period and their years of exile in Amman and Manama.

This communal family affair takes you through otherworldly menus and expressive plates. Chef Kuv's supper clubs are known for the secret menus that are revealed to the participants only after joining the experience.

Experience the drop-in stargazing sessions at the Moonlight Market taking place in 421 on April 1 and 2. Organized in collaboration with Al Sadeem Observatory's astronomy team, these sessions feature smart telescopes and give visitors the chance to observe the stars, moon, and distant planets.

Moonlit Market brings together locally-based food concepts, creative businesses, artists, and artisans over two days to activate the outdoor plaza at 421 in Mina Zayed. 

The 100 posters featured in this exhibition were selected through an open call as part of the 4th edition of the 100/100: Hundred Best Arabic Posters competition, which is supported by 421. The competition drew thousands of submissions from over 30 countries and the winning works were chosen to be part of the exhibition. This exhibition was previously presented at 421 and is now taking place at Umm Al Emarat Park until April 23 for wider public viewing. 

The program features listening parties, outdoor night markets, drop-in creative workshops, stargazing excursions, community gatherings, and a supper club. This year’s Ramadan program at 421 ushers in the Spring 2023 Season, and with that, lays the foundation for a season’s worth of sensory experiences that allow us to collectively reflect and hone in on ideas that unite us all under starry skies.

As part of our Winter 2023 Season, we invite visitors to head to our front desk to pick up recycled seed paper, which includes various fruit and vegetable seeds to be planted in the pots located in Courtyard 2. The seed paper can be planted after writing a meaningful memory on it.

The opening reception will include tours, a talk and performance, as well as a live DJ set by Isaac Sullivan.

All About My Mother: The Black Foal Tale  is a participatory performance by artist Fatima Uzdenova as part of her contribution to the group exhibition And The Mirrors Are Many.

In this performance, Reem Al Menhali presents a series of poems of varying lengths, tones, and rhythms that reimagine historical time-keeping. 

The first solo exhibition presenting the work of Mahshid Rafiei, Of Mythic Proportions is a large-scale installation of five newly commissioned works. 

This exhibition is a result of the 421 Artistic Development Exhibition Program, which is organized in collaboration with pedagogical partner The Institute of Emerging Art. Of Mythic Proportions is the inaugural presentation of the 2023 edition of the program.

And The Mirrors Are Many investigates institutional repositories of memory–the museum, the memorial and the archive–and poses the questions: why do we remember, and how? 

This exhibition is curated by Mona Al-Jadir and emerged from a year-long journey as part of the 421 Curatorial Development Exhibition Program in collaboration with The Bombay Institute for Critical Analysis and Research (BICAR) and with mentorship from curator Sabih Ahmed.  

Join exhibition curator Mona Al-Jadir for a special guided tour of the major exhibition And The Mirrors are Many. This 45-minute tour will include an in-depth discussion around the themes of the exhibition and an overview of the artworks on display. The tour also includes a performance by artist Reem Almenahli.

Join us for an exciting journey through time and memory in this drop-in arts session! The session offers fun and creative activities for children that encourage them to think about memory in imaginative ways through storytelling, drawing, doodling, coloring, painting, and much more. 

Drop in style sessions from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Please note that this event takes place at the 421 popup in Dubai at Alserkal Avenue during Alqouz Arts Festival.
