Join us for an evening of documentary film that spotlight bold, intimate, and reflective storytelling from emerging voices in the region. This summer, Between the Lines presents a curated selection of docu-shorts created by filmmakers participating in the Arab Film Studio program under the Creative Media Authority.
Each film draws from lived experience, exploring memory, loss, community, and personal transformation,while experimenting with the language of documentary. Through nuanced narratives and creative approaches, the featured filmmakers delve into untold stories, family legacies, and emotional landscapes often left unspoken.
The screening will conclude with a panel discussion featuring the filmmakers.

Umm Salama the Matchmaker
Directed by Mariam Alawadhi
Synopsis:
As Umm Salama finally persuades her stubborn daughter Salama to consider marriage, she embarks on a journey to find the perfect suitor for her daughter. However, as Salama starts considering potential suitors, Umm Salama’s conflicting emotions cloud her judgment, leading to unexpected outcomes.
Haj Ahmed

Synopsis:
Ahmed goes back home to his mother Afsoon, who is celebrating his return after a long absence. Both mother and son will have to keep up their lies about this absence in order to save their reputation amongst their relatives.
Shame

Mahra's attempt to flee from home is abruptly halted when her mother catches her. In the ensuing intense confrontation, Mahra is faced with a pivotal choice: accept her predetermined fate or summon the strength to assert her independence and forge her own destiny.
May We Talk About Loss?

Synopsis:
May We Talk About Loss delves into the unspoken grief of miscarriage. Five women bravely relate their own stories while standing out against prejudices and promoting understanding. In contrast to the prevalent treatment of miscarried fetuses as medical waste, the film depicts Abu Dhabi's one-of-a-kind miscarried baby section in the city burial.

Synopsis:
Laila, a 26-year-old established artist, is commissioned to sketch a portrait of her subject, Elena. Despite her experience, Elena proves to be a challenging subject, and Laila struggles to capture her essence on paper. When Laila presents the finished piece, Elena questions Laila's artistic abilities, leaving Layla disheartened.
