Warehouse421 Homebound Residency: DIGITAL COMMUNITIES
Applications open: May 16 until August 7, 2021
Residency will start October 2021 - April 2022
Warehouse421 is pleased to announce the second iteration of its Homebound Residency programme. DIGITAL COMMUNITIES will take place between October 2021 and April 2022. Applications will be received in English and in Arabic from 16th May to 7th August 2021.
The Warehouse421 Homebound Residency programme seeks to support creative practitioners from within the region in producing new works and exploring the digital forms of community engagement within their practices while working remotely. This six-month programme offers its residents curatorial support and a production budget of up to AED 20,000 to be employed for any equipment or material required for the completion and realisation of their projects.
As much of the world’s social and communal spaces continue to migrate into the digital realm, this past year has served to highlight the untapped potentials of the ever-expanding forms of community engagement.
DIGITAL COMMUNITIES challenges creative practitioners to think deeply about connection, communication, and multi-dimensional interaction with one another and with their respective communities, as well as the various ways in which we inhabit and occupy the cyberspace.
Arts residencies have often made possible the opportunities for new experiences, networks, conversations, and exchanges of ideas. DIGITAL COMMUNITIES seeks to explore what has now been made possible:
How may artists negotiate the conditions of being online; not only as individuals, but as a community? How may we create and hold collective and communal spaces through screens, temporal disparities, and concerns of global heating and climate crises? Do remote and online workflows have the capacity to support existing practices? What does the Digital offer to art practitioners that had previously not been possible? How may we identify, read through, and disengage from harmful cyber and digital practices and habits?
DIGITAL COMMUNITIES encourages creative practitioners to consider these questions and more in their applications and areas of research, and to seek and explore new methods of community engagement that are able to support their current practices in digital or analogue form.
For this second iteration of the Warehouse421 Homebound Residency programme, DIGITAL COMMUNITIES will be led by guest-curator Reem Shadid and will take place between October 2021 and April 2022. Together with the guest curator, interlocutors identified by the selected participants will be of aid and guidance throughout the residency process. Residents will take part in regular discussion circles throughout the residency, and material and logistical support will be provided by Warehouse421 for new bodies of work looking beyond the current pandemic.
DIGITAL COMMUNITIES will culminate in an online presentation of processes and works.
The Warehouse421 Homebound Residency programme is open to creative practitioners of all disciplines — including, without limitation to, Visual Arts & Curation, Design & Technology, Theatre & Performance, Literary Arts, Culinary Arts, and Music — from within the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia regions.
Applications are available online in English and in Arabic.
Eligible applicants must be over 21 years of age.
