This book excavates language from my notebooks dated 2001 through 2015, and much of the language is of unkown origin and untraceable. This book was compiled in June of 2015. 500 copies were printed in July and exhibited in stacks in September of the same year.

Hala Al Ani is interested in the loss of control in design. With The Liminal Vase she invites the natural process into her design, using salt formations. Playing with the usability of salt as a building material, Hala gives up part of her authoritarian role by allowing the crystallisation process to dictate the formal qualities of the surface.

Reinterpreting Ritual Aesthetics is an ongoing research to distinguish between live tradition and hollow convention, a fundamental confusion remaining prevalent concerning the adoration of traditions, particularly in religious settings. One of the outcomes of this research is the piece Al-Sajjadah 01.

Studio D04 Medkhan is a minimalistic take on the daily censor present in every Emirati household. The frame cages the smoke celebrating it as the main element of the design and houses a small compartment to store the Oud/Bukhoor to ease functionality.

Hollow Forms Vessels

The glass blowing industry in Palestine is one of the most beautiful and technically advanced local traditions. To revive this tradition the concept of this project is to experiment with more contemporary forms and collaborate with the craftsmen in the area to produce a provocative exhibition.

Hussain Al Moosawi is an Emirati communication designer and photographer. Trained in Australia and currently based in Abu Dhabi, he worked as an infographic artist at The National newspaper for the last four years, where he was responsible for generating its infographic content across print and digital platforms.

"Reminiscing AlBurkan" Sticker

‘Reminiscing Al Burkan’ is a work created out of the artist’s passion for Abu Dhabi city and pays homage to the now-demolished Volcano Fountain.

Built in the early 80s, the fountain was located on the Abu Dhabi corniche and was a well-known tourist attraction.

Perfume Sachet

The making of fragrance is a living art in the Emirati culture. The perfume sachet is made of canvas material and has an artwork printed on it. The sachet can be used to store bukhoor or any scented material.

Keychain

The design of this key chain was inspired by a before-and-after photo sequence—capturing a car with its hood up, then down—taken during a roadside break down in the 1970s.

Pillow

This pillow and its design is inspired by the once popular red-and-white floral patterns, reminder of Emirati home décor in the 1970s and 1980s. Show home interiors are decorated with the same style pillows.

Comb

Bedouin men and women combed their long hair with combs that had a few, strong teeth. The design of this comb was inspired by wooden combs used locally during the 1950s and 1960s.

Coffee “Gahwa” Cups

Numerous family photographs shared with the Lest We Forget archive show home interiors decorated with the same motif. Inspired by the once popular red-and-white floral patterns, this Arabic coffee cup is a nostalgic reminder of Emirati home décor in the 1970s and 1980s.

Sheikh Zayed: A Century of Memories - with acrylic sleeve

The exhibition and companion book, celebrate the centennial of the birth of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (1918-2004), the Founder and first President of the the United Arab Emirates. The exhibition displayed personal objects of remembrance shared by people who’s lives were elevated by Sheikh Zayed. 

Postcards set

Rawdha Al Ketbi is an artist who enjoys exploring forgotten places. Rawdha became fascinated by metal doors with patriotic falcons and dhow emblems and she decided to photograph them and create a series of postcards.

Greeting Card Perfume

These sachets are filled with an aroma passed down by the women in Mona Haddad’s family. During her internship at Lest We Forget, Mona created a series of prints documenting memories inspired by her family perfumes. A print and oral history from the series adorn these fragrant sachets.

Greeting Card Burqa

The greeting card contains a watercolor painting of a Burqa in a macintosh box which celebrates Emirati tangible adornment. The story of the painting and what it illustrates is inscribed on the back of the card.

Falcon Postcard

The postcard contains a watercolor painting inspired

from an image in the Lest We Forget Archive of a falcon-shaped pin which is the UAE national emblem.

Burqaa Tote Bag

The striking design of this durable canvas tote was inspired by the burqa. The burqa folds at the seam on either side of the tote. Stories associated with the burqa are written on the inner pocket of the durable canvas tote.

Murtaasha Tote Bag

This tote bears an illustration of a traditional Emirati merta’asha gold necklace. Emirati brides wore beautiful merta’asha necklaces on their weddings. The sketch on the side was created by Shauna Emig, a student of the University of Edinburg, during her internship at LWF. 

Camera on Tripod tote bag

The canvas bag is custom made to fit the book Lest We Forget: Family Photographs 1950-1999. The title page of the book and a photograph of a camera set on a tripod in the desert (taken in the 1980s) are printed on the sides of the bag.

Library tote bag

The design of the canvas material bag was inspired by photographs and oral histories contributed to the Lest We Forget Archive. The late Sheikh Zayed bin sultan Al Nahyan frequented this public library and bookshop that once stood in the old central cork of Abu Dhabi. A before-and-after photo is printed on the sides of the bag and the story of the images is printed on the inner pocket of the bag.

Sheikh Zayed tote bag

The exhibition and companion book, celebrate the centennial of the birth of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (1918-2004), the Founder and first President of the the United Arab Emirates. Objects and photographs associated with Sheikh Zayed filled the Founder’s Memorial during the final week of ‘The Year of Zayed.’ The book contains one hundred reproductions of these items along with associated memories.

It’s not you, It’s Me

“It’s Not You, It’s Me” curated by Tirdad Zolghadr, commissioned by Dr Lamees Hamdan is a playful and provocative name for the UAE's first pavilion at the La Biennale de Venezia. The exhibition and companion book, celebrate the centennial of the birth of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (1918-2004), the Founder and first President of the the United Arab Emirates. The companion book contains one hundred reproductions of these items along with associated memories.
